Dr Alex Wonhas, is Global Managing Director Energy, Resources and Manufacturing at Aurecon, a leading engineering advisory firm.
Alex joined Aurecon in 2017 from CSIRO, where he was Executive Director for Environment, Energy & Resources.
Alex has been a key contributor to the Australian energy and sustainability debate for well over a decade. Among many initiatives, Alex was instrumental in initiating the Australian National Outlook 2015. A research project that was published on the cover of Nature. It was the most complex and integrated analysis of its kind globally and concluded that Australia can enjoy continued strong growth from the resources sector if it focuses on capturing the resource productivity improvements the sector offers.
Alex is a sought after adviser to industry and government on energy matters. For example, Alex has initiated the Network Transformation Roadmap with the Energy Networks Association, was a member of federal government’s expert panel of the 2012 and 2015 Energy White Papers and he was appointed to the Low Emissions Technology Roundtable, convened by the Minerals Council of Australia. He also served on several boards including the Australian Low Emissions Coal R&D and the CO2CRC.
Alex also had first hand experience in the development and commercialisation of a number of transformative energy and resource technologies ranging from fast gold assay analysis, grid-scale battery storage to AI based energy optimisation through BuildingIQ, an ASX listed energy services business.
Prior to Aurecon and CSIRO, Alex worked at McKinsey, where he co-authored the first Australian Carbon Abatement Cost Curve. Alex holds a PhD in Theoretical Physics from the University of Cambridge, UK.
